Descritption of Reinforced Concrete Frame systems
This section focuses on low-rise to mid-rise housing with lateral load resisting system consisting of RC columns and beams (designed for gravity loads only- no frame action) or constructed as RC moment resisting frames. Buildings having RC structure consisting of moment resisting frames are always engineered. For residential purposes for space partition function different types of walls are constructed in the building. However those act as infills and their contribution for lateral loads is significant. Different type of infill walls and topology of reinforced concrete members are considered in this section. In many countries in the past concrete was readily available and presented affordable construction material. Thus initially floors and bond-beams were constructed from reinforced concrete and at a later stage reinforced concrete columns and beams were also introduced. In cases of engineered buildings oftentimes those were designed for gravity only. Non-engineered forms of RC structures are also wery common. In both cases those houses lack adequate resistance to lateral loads and are vulnerable to earthquakes. The information will apply to new construction planning, design and detailing.
